Thank you for registering for the Foundations Level 1 Hummingbird Indigenous Cultural Safety (ICS) training.

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is committed to building strong relationships with Indigenous communities, reducing inequities in the social determinants of health, and improving access to health care for Indigenous/Aboriginal people. At VCH we have an Indigenous Cultural Safety policy that guides VCH to become a culturally safe organization and inform health care provision. By offering Indigenous Cultural Safety Training to Allied Health Professionals and physicians across VCH we are better informed to deliver more culturally sensitive and safe practices as well as traditional practices if requested, into patient care.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Foundational awareness and general knowledge of Canadian history of colonization, implications of history, and how this may impact Indigenous people
  2. Discuss the purpose and significance of Indigenous cultural safety in health care
  3. Formulate linkages between Canadian colonialism, trauma, and the social determinants of health from a population and health perspective
  4. Begins to incorporate cultural humility into practice by exploring and challenging beliefs and biases
We recognize that our places of work and Vancouver Coastal facilities lie on the traditional homelands of the fourteen First Nation communities of Heiltsuk, Kitasoo-Xai'xais, Lil'wat, Musqueam, N'Quatqua, Nuxalk, Samahquam, Sechelt, Skatin, Squamish, Tla'amin, Tsleil-Waututh, Wuikinuxv, and Xa'xtsa.
