The care of patients with hematological malignancies is certainly complex. Like many patients with serious illness, these patients require a holistic approach to their care, whereby their physical, psychosocial, emotional, spiritual and financial needs are met. In doing so, we are integrating a palliative approach into our care, and all members of the interdisciplinary team can support the integration of this approach through careful assessment, the adoption of helpful conversation strategies, and appropriate documentation in the electronic health record.

In this course, learners will broaden their understanding of the term "palliative approach" and be introduced to ways in which they can "action" a palliative approach as part of the care they provide to all patients in Leukemia Bone Marrow Transplant (LBMT). The concept of a palliative approach will also be compared and contrasted to terms such as end of life care and terminal care. Learners will be supported to review the Serious Illness Conversation Guide and the ways in which it can be utilized in their practice, and will also be guided to understand the unique elements of providing palliative care to the LBMT patient population. Lastly, learners will be guided through important principles of pain and symptom management as well as end of life care, particularly in the context of hematological malignancies.
