This course is intended for staff and students conducting research at Canada's Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre laboratories.
After completing this course, learners will be able to:
- Know the risks associated with biohazardous material
- Understand the classification of biological agents (pathogens) into Risk Groups
- Learn what factors must be considered in conducting a biological risk assessment and how to apply the information obtained from this assessment in determining containment level requirements
- Become familiar with the various exposure control methods including engineering and administrative controls as well as the appropriate use and selection of personal protective equipment
- Become competent in the physical and operational requirements of Containment Levels 1 and 2
- Learn about the classification and proper use of biological safety cabinets
- Understand the various methods of decontamination and learn what factors to consider in selecting the most appropriate and effective method
- Understand the requirements for the importation, exportation of regulated biological materials
